It's July. Typically July weather in CO is as follows: Hot. High of 92. Chance of quick light shower in the afternoon (usually around 2 or 3). Low of 68.
Weather this past week: Mild. High of 69. Cloudy and showers throughout the day. Thunderstorms at night. Low of 54.
And you know what? I love it! I know, I know, it's summer, I should be at the pool or the park, and I will be...next week. But this little reprieve from the hot is nice. I guess WA State has it the other way around...sorry guys - you should come visit here for a little bit until it cools off there!
Otherwise, we've been doing well. Evan's top 2 teeth are working themselves into view and it's not very fun for either of us. He's grumpy when the Tylenol runs out and has a runny nose, but otherwise, we're plugging along like normal. We get to talk to Scot in the evenings and he's enjoying the rotation - sort of. He's not allowed to do anything yet, which is a stark difference from his last Ortho rotation where he got to help place pins, drill, and suture. I guess it's all part and parcel of working with residents since they're there to do the stuff, but still - how are they going to know if they like him if they never get to see him in action?
I just posted my mom's hummus recipe on the other blog - enjoy!
I will sing joyful praises and be filled with excitement like a guest at a banquet. Psalm 63:5

Day 4...
...and I'm lonely.
I really thought I would last longer until I got lonely - but I didn't. Scot's been gone since Friday morning, and even though I've been down to the Springs, at church, (and a church picnic), and house stuff in between, I'm lonely. I don't really notice it until after dinner and I have nothing to do but play with Evan - which isn't bad - but there's not adult conversation over dinner and that's hard. The absolute hardest part is going to bed. Not because I'm alone, but because I run through all the windows and doors and double and triple check that I've locked them all before climbing the stairs and into bed and laying there in the pitch black. Yeah - not fun.
BUT - I am thankful for a few things.

- Less dishes means less times I have to run the dishwasher
- Same goes for clothes :)
- Internet/email
- Digital cameras
- Cell phones (and Verizon to Verizon calling!)
- Family close by
- Knowing Scot is with people who love him and he's well taken care of
- Friends who care for me and won't let me go through this alone

life around here...
...has been busy.
Scot is leaving tomorrow and so I've been helping him pack and get things ready for him to be gone. Clothes (almost all of them), food stuffs, misc house items he'll be needing...it's been quite the undertaking and multiple trips to Walmart. Also, it's been so well worth it. He's on his way home now and we're planning on just hanging the rest of the day. Maybe hit the pool, even! I"m off tomorrow right after he leaves to spend some distraction time down in the springs with my folks and some friends. Here is the start to me keeping extra busy so the time passes fast. I'll keep you all updated, I promise. For now, here are some pictures over the last few days:

Finger-lickin' good banana bread batter!!

Stuck. And not happy about it. Especially not happy that mommy saw him, ran to get the camera, and then helped him out.

Birthday shoes from Uncle Jared - they'll fit perfectly in the fall

Jared always told me that if I had a boy, he would buy him shoes for his birthdays. Well, he held true to his word and Evan loves his new shoes.

a wonderFULL weekend
I have no idea how to quickly summarize this past weekend, but I'll try - it was a whirlwind to say the least!! Saturday late afternoon, Scot and I attended the wedding of a friend from college. It was great fun - not only was I able to see Judd promise his life to Nicole, but I was also able to see a lot of friends who I hadn't seen since my own wedding!! It was also a big deal because Evan wasn't with us! About an hour before we had to leave up to the mountains for the wedding, my mom called to say she was going to be stopping by right before we left to say hi. And the idea hit me. Mom can take Evan home with her!
And then I immediately banished the idea because how on earth would I live an entire evening and night and morning without my son?!
But then I thought...Scot's only here for less than a week, we should do this. But then, I was worried about all the things you worry about when contemplating leaving your first born for the first time, overnight with someone else, even if it is wonderful, capable, willing, loving grandparents. I knew he wouldn't starve or fall down steps or even miss us (yes, I knew deep down that he would have so much fun he wouldn't even know we were gone), but still, it was hard to ask my mom if she would mind. Mind...the woman nearly screeched with excitement that I would let him go home with her. So I scrambled, checked and double checked that I had everything, and off he went, grinning in his car seat as I waved and watched the car drive away.
I admit it...I cried...just a little bit. It was a lot harder than I thought it would be, but it was soooo good for us, especially with Scot leaving soon. We were able to dance and not watch the clock for dinner/snack/bed time. And he had a blast playing and eating fun foods and making everyone around him laugh at his little antics.
The hardest part of it all was waking up Sunday morning without him there. I still woke up at 7 after a slightly wakeful night (I kept thinking I heard him...that ever happen to you?), but was able to just lounge once I convinced myself he was fine. I didn't even call my folks til 8:30 when we were on our way down to the Springs to meet them at church. My oldest friend Ross, who I've known since I was 6 weeks old, was in town visiting on his way to Westminster West - it had been about 4 years since we had really gotten the chance to just sit and catch up, so that's exactly what we did. We took him to Garden of the Gods and he was able to see the beauty of the place. We also went to our favorite ice cream place - Josh and Johns - seriously, it's the best ice cream ever. They make it right there and among the 'normal flavors' they have fantastic ones like Jack Daniels, Irish Coffee, Pandemonium Golden Fudge, Oatmeal Cookie, Almond Joy, Strawberry Cheesecake....the list goes on, but you get the idea. Overall...a wonderful weekend.
Anyway, here are just a few pictures from the wedding and visit to the Springs.

Anniversay Weekend a little early
Saturday, Scot stopped studying early and we went shopping!! I had returned a gift to Ross the other day and had almost 15 dollars on a gift card. Scot was so good and helped me pick out 2 tops and a cute dress - and we didn't spend more than 10 dollars out of pocket!! Gotta love Ross sales and a willing husband!! That night we dropped Evan off with some dear friends and we were able to go out to dinner. Again, the Lord provided! The day before, a 'Secret Sister' from church gave me a gift certificate to this little Mexican restaurant. Spend $35 and get $25 off! Sweet!! (thank you secret sister if you're reading this!!!) So Scot and I went and were able to actually order something other than water with our dinner - and we were able to both get a dessert. It was a true treat! The Lord really looks out for us in the small things, too. This proves it.
Sunday after church we headed to the Zoo. I had already been that week, but Scot had never been and so we took about two hours looking around and getting our fill of the animals. Thankfully, all the 'cool' ones were out!! Lions, other 'cats', the bears were all out, and the peacocks were showing off...again! Scot had a blast and we spent a quiet evening with Evan and ended up playing Yahtzee late into the night. It was so much fun!!
A tradition that we've made is getting our pictures taken...in a photo booth!! We started the first one the very first summer we were dating (05) and as you can see, we've done one (or 2, in the case of 06! We had just gotten engaged in those pictures) every year since! The first set is lovingly called 'our smurf pictures'. :) They don't always turn out perfectly, some are a little blurry, but it's fun to do and it's hilarious to watch both of our hair styles change over the years! At least our smiles don't change!! Have fun laughing!!

Frugal Friday
Kjerste had this posted on her blog today:
Use it up.
Wear it out.
Make it do,
Or do without!
Wear it out.
Make it do,
Or do without!
She asked us what we do without to make out money stretch a little bit farther in this economy. Her personal example was that she puts her kiddos in just onesies and cotton pants for jammies instead of going out and buying new light weight summer jams! I already do that with Evan, so here was my tip. It goes more off of the 'wear it out' part of her phrase, but it still helps the bottom line!!
You know those expensive water diapers pools make your kids wear? Well, I was appalled that I had to spend ten bucks for a pack of 18!! We go to the pool at least 3 times a week since it's a 2 minute walk from our house and it's free. Evan loves the water and it's a good activity to break up the day, especially now that it's warm out. But I didn't want to have to buy these expensive packs of diapers ever 2/3 weeks! So here's what I do...if Evan only pees in the diaper, I take it off (not tear it off) and just wring the diaper out! I turn it inside out and let it dry over night. I can get 3 or 4 uses out of one diaper before it tears or...the inevitable happens. I think I'll be able to go all summer on just one pack!!

i went to the animal fair...
This guys was out and even looking at us - I just wasn't camera ready when he was! So majestic looking!
Peacock number one
Peacock number 2 - it is so rare that these guys show off for you, but it must have been something about the morning air because there were 2 who were all open!
Peacock number three
I have pictures with this Polar Bear from when I was about 7 - and so we took turns taking pictures in front of it. This is, obviously, the group shot...
Eli playing in the fountains after lunch - he had so much fun as you can tell!!
This little guy was adorable, he would get close to the fountains, but he would thrust his umbrella out in front so as to not get hit by the mist. Too cute.
Evan walking away from the fountains - he didn't like them too much.
What a wonderful day so far!! Now, while Evan is still sleeping, I have house things that beckon!

what is summer without watermelon?
My folks and Uncle Dave were over for dinner last night (Spinach Lasagna) and we had watermelon for 'dessert' - it was so good!! Evan thought it was especially yummy, too!!

to do lists
I live on To Do Lists. I mean it. I really do. Today's lists looked like this:
Call for Drs appt
Walk
Vacuum
Cash checks
Bathrooms
Unpack
Meal plan/list
Pictures
Blog
Well, I called the Drs office and they had an opening for today (Praise the Lord), so I scurried around and did almost everything else on my list before that this afternoon - still have meal planning to do..... Right now my poor little boy has 4 band-aids on his little thighs and is asleep - so I decided to tackle item numbers eight and nine on my list. Is it a little sad that I actually have 'blog' on my list? Do any of you do that, too?
I hope your 4th of July was wonderful - ours was for sure! We went 'camping' with our wonderful friends Britt and Ryan and their little girl Abby! I say camping very very loosely here. We stayed in Ryan's folk's trailer thing - but...we were up in the mountains and we hiked and we grilled and we made a fire and cooked marshmallows. So other than the fact that we weren't sleeping in a tent and we had running water, it was essentially like camping. Right? Any way you look at it, it was a blast. The kids were great and played together. They were pretty much on the same nap/eating schedule, which worked out perfectly. They both napped on the way up to Buena Vista, napped on the way to St Elmo to feed the chipmunks, and they both fell asleep on the way to watch fireworks and stayed asleep until daybreak. It was fantastic. We adults pigged out on burgers and out of the husk off of the grill corn - oh my goodness, was that ever delicious. If you like corn, and you grill, you should never eat corn any other way. Just grill the corn in the husk until you have 1 or 2 layers on it. It's the best. Really.
The fireworks display was decent - but we weren't really up there for the fireworks, we were up there for the relaxation and fellowship. We went on one good hike Sunday morning up to some little waterfalls (all those pictures are on Britt's camera, so
I'll post them later), we went up to St Elmo to feed the chipmunks on Saturday and they was so much fun! The chipmunks were everywhere and I was able to get a good picture of one with his cheeks full - so cute! There were some trails right around the 'camp ground' and next to the Arkansas Rover that we explored on our down time - it was a great weekend!!
Here are some pictures. These are just the favorites of the favorites...all of them will be up in our Picasa pages soon.....I'll put it on my To Do list one of these next couple days!

Evan's Birthday!!!
Thanks to digital cameras, I was able to capture little moments on 'film' that I wouldn't have been able to a few years ago and the pictures where eyes are closed or Evan looks half drunk eating his cake, I was able to delete! And after even deleting more pictures, here are the cream of the crop/fun pictures I thought you all would enjoy. Almost all the cake eating pictures are in there so you would feel like you were right there with him, watching the crumbs fall to the ground like we did!!
It was a wonderful day!! The after picnic party was great - there were 44 people there and we all had a blast celebrating and eating cup cakes! The kids had a blast playing at Westlands Park, this HUGE park here in Denver with 4 separate sections for different ages of kids, and because it's CO, there was a climbing rock that the boys especially enjoyed! Evan had a good second nap to get ready for the evening festivities. My folks came over early and they were able to have a fun time with Evan. Scot's Uncle Dave was able to make it, too, which was especially fun since he comes over for dinner every Tuesday and has been able to see Evan grow pver the last few months. Scot's folks showed up a little late, but still in time to eat some dinner. My cousin (once removed), her husband, and great Aunt were able to come over for cake and ice cream. We ate and opened presents and put the little one to bed after a good bath! I think the day wore him out since he slept in today!! All in all, it was a wonderful day!
Enjoy the slideshow - there are a lot of pictures, so beware!

Here is a slide show of Evan each month on his month-day with Mr Penguin!! I love watching the progression of size (as well as the annoyance of Mr Penguin!) through the months! You can totally see a little personality forming, too!! Enjoy!

ps....
...Evan's 'officially'* walking!!! He's gone from 3 steps at a time a few days ago to just getting up and going, falling, and then getting right back up again and continuing to walk!!
*Officially for us was at least 12 continuous unassisted steps more than 3 times in 1 day!!
*Officially for us was at least 12 continuous unassisted steps more than 3 times in 1 day!!
sweet little boy
Evan will be one tomorrow and I find myself in a very contemplative mood today. Last year I was huge pregnant and wondering when he would come. I went to my Drs appt and unexpectedly was admitted to the hospital. The Lord was very gracious to us int he timing of Evan's birth as well as just how everything went. And what gets me is how fresh those memories are - as if it were last month, not a year ago, that I gave birth. Sigh...anyways, on with the updates!
This past week was slightly crazy. There are pictures on our Picasa page for you to see if you want. Scot was off all week to study for boards, so I made myself, and Evan, as scarce as possible so he could study distraction-free. We went to people's houses, went to the zoo, had a picnic at Wash park with friends. Friday, I headed down to the springs for a bridal shower and to visit with some friends from out of town who were staying with my folks. It was a fantastic weekend of fun and fellowship and lots of food! We did a 5.5 mile hike on Saturday and I was beat, but it felt great!! Scot came down Sunday afternoon to just relax a bit before the test Monday morning (in the springs). We went for a hike, got caught in a rain storm (gotta love CO!) where Scot saved the day by running ahead to pull the van up for us while I ran pell mell down the dirt road with Evan clutched tightly in my arms with 2 rain coats on to protect him!! The Lord was good and the hail started the second we were in the van!! We headed to downtown Colorado Springs for some Josh and Johns home made ice cream - YUM!! We were soaked, but it made it all the more fun. A motorcycle convention was going on and we had to park a few blocks away, but it just made the ice cream that much sweeter. And the guys drooled the entire walk there with all the motorcycles in the streets and sidewalks! Seriously, there were probably 5,000 bikes, and I guess half of them had already left!!
This week is going just as quickly. We got in late Monday night, so yesterday was my grocery and tidy up day. Today is laundry and baking the cakes day and more cleaning! It's amazing how dirty a house can get when you're not even here, huh?? I hope to get over to the pool this afternoon - after lunch and such. Tomorrow is the big day!! We have a big park picnic party planned (wow - that was totally unintentional alliteration there!) in the afternoon, and then the family dinner party in the evening. It should be lots of fun - look for pictures on Friday!
Well, here are 2 pictures for you guys!!
